Boyne River Garden

Boyne Valley

Location Boyne Valley, Co Meath
Year 2018
Type Semi-Rural Garden
Duration 4 weeks
01 —

The core design idea for this semi-rural garden of a detached house overlooking the Boyne river and wildflower meadows was that it had to be wheelchair friendly.

The client had recently built a large new modern house extension with an interconnecting apartment that needed direct wheelchair access to the garden. A combination of premium composite decking with sawn-edged blue limestone was used for the upper terrace with stunning views down to the river Boyne.

This terrace area is flanked by two large raised beds planted with ornamental grasses, adding softness and movement to the garden.

Planting throughout the garden is inspired by the surrounding natural landscape. Wheelchair access to the lower section of the garden is via a wide purpose-built ramp that connects to the rest of the garden. A small flight of steps leads down from the raised terrace to a garden sculpture (by Irish Sculptor Ronan Butler at The Kildare Gallery) depicting swans in flight and chosen by the client to reflect the swans in the nearby river Boyne.
