The clients were a young professional couple who had recently fully renovated their 1950’s house in the suburbs of Dublin.

The renovation included a modern extension linking the back of the house to the large, sheltered garden surrounded by mature planting. Inspired by mid-century modern design, the clients wanted their new garden to have a simple and clean modern layout with an in-built BBQ that could be used for entertaining.  A large rectangular lawn was the central feature of the design, creating a bright and open modern garden with a nod to Australian outdoor living.

Silver granite rectangular paving was laid in a grid pattern for the main patio area leading off the back extension and the second patio at the end of the garden.

This area which enjoys the evening sun is used for outdoor dining, providing the space for an L-shaped garden sofa and dining table. Silver granite was also used for the walled seating area here, adding another geometric aspect and flow to the design. Existing old boundary walls were painted in black, contrasting beautifully with the whiteness of the silver granite while adding depth to the lush green planting.  New planting included four very tall Magnolia trees (5 metres high) and tree ferns adding structure and height to the garden, along with olive and fig trees.  The re-shaping of an existing Eucalyptus tree and a Philadelphus tree was carried out to show off the sculptural stems and add interest. The beautiful simplicity of this contemporary garden epitomizes modern outdoor living in a suburban setting.
